Professional Development Certificate in Teaching Community Languages 2009
Enrolment for 2009 course will be open November 2008
This certificate course has been designed by the University of New South Wales Institute of Languages (UNSWIL) for teachers who have not had any formal training in the teaching of languages other than English (LOTE) and wish to increase their knowledge and improve their methods of teaching LOTE.
This certificate is recognized by the NSW Department of Education and Training as the minimum qualification for teachers in the Community languages program. It may confer advanced standing in other courses offered by UNSWIL, depending on qualifications obtained previously.
Presenters are all qualified teacher trainers with community language backgrounds a nd include staff from UNSWIL and the Department of Modern Languages, University of New South Wales Institute of Languages. At the end of the course, provided all attendance and assessment requirements have been met, participants will receive a certificate issued by UNSWIL.

Management Principals for Community Languages Schools
This course is designed for at least one person form the management committee and also for teacher of each school. Components of the course include: incorporation, administration, financial management, Public Liability, Duty of Care and workers compensation. A must for all management committees
DET Policies
This course is designed for at least one person from the management committee and also for teachers of each school. Schools will be briefed on the Department of Education and Training's Policies that affect each school and which policies need to be specifically adapted to each school. A must for all management committees and teachers.
Scope and Sequence
This course is for all language teachers. It examines an area that is vital in whole school planning and in the learning sequences. Scope includes decisions about what is significant and manageable. Sequence includes decisions about what is necessary for sequential development of both skills and concepts. This course is needed to complete the question about scope and sequence in the online application. A must for all new and overseas-trained teachers.
Designing a Unit of Work
Unit design will use outcomes based terminology focusing on the areas outlined in the syllabus. The course will cover integrated teaching/learning activities. A follow up from the Scope and Sequence Course. A must for all teachers.
How to run a meeting
Find out the importance of planning for meetings and keeping to a planned agenda. This course is important both for new management committee members and principals of community language schools.
D is for Dictation
Running out of ideas for classroom dictations? Not all languages have spelling bees and dictations are the way to go to keep spelling at bay. Interesting ideas for presenting dictations for the new teacher and the one who wants refreshing new ideas to use in the languages classroom.
Assessment and Reporting
This course introduces the 'Way of New Reporting', which was introduced by the Board of Studies in 2006 and 'What does A to E means?'. The Board of Studies develops statewide curriculum standards for all government and non-government schools in New South Wales. These determine what students are required to learn. The Board has also developed the A to E descriptions of achievement. These will be used to describe how well a student has achieved in each subject over the past semester (two terms). Achievement standards will be applied consistently across the state.
Senior First Aid Course
This course is for volunteers and staff who wish to obtain their First Aid Certificate.

- Principles of First Aid
- Resuscitation [E.A.R. and C.P.R.]
- Basic human anatomy and function
- Management of an unconscious casualty, and
- Communicable diseases
- Management of an emergency situation.

A WorkCover Accredited First Aid Certificate
[valid for 3 years] is awarded upon successful completion
of assessment on the 2nd day.
