Developing Community Language Resources

Celebrating Community Collaboration

Community language schools began in Australia in 1939. The schools have always been established and run by parents and community members. They take place in day schools, churches or community centres on the weekend or on weekdays after schools.  The teachers in the Community Languages Schools are parents and community members. They volunteer their time to develop children’s knowledge of their heritage, language and culture.

This project involved the development and sharing of skills, resources and expertise between Community Language Schools and the University of Wollongong, Faculty of Education staff and students. The project included workshops and development of a wide range of literacy resources.

The materials were developed to meet the needs of the schools and to extend the availability of quality teaching resources.
